weekend getaway to Nevada

We met up with family for a few days in Las Vegas this past weekend and took the opportunity to spend a night at the Hoover Dam. It's the first time we've been away in a while and we all really needed it!

L-R: Robin and the babe at the Hoover Dam trail head, the sun coming up over the rock formation outside our hotel window, Rosemary and the babe exploring the trail head.
We drove late on Saturday to spend the night at the Hoover Dam Lodge in Boulder City. We woke up to beautiful desert vistas and spent some time at the Hoover Dam Lodge trail head after splashing around in the hotel pool first.

L-R: driving under the bridge on our way to the Hoover Dam, family picture time at the halfway mark, a view of Hoover Dam as we walked across from Arizona.
We went into town after breakfast and checked out the Hoover Dam museum then drove over the Hoover Dam. We parked on the Arizona side and walked around in the heat for a bit. Even though it wasn't our first trip to Hoover Dam it still never fails to amaze!

L-R: Motel for sale with fun MCM typography, restored neon installation on Fremont Street, pool time with the babe at the Thunderbird Motel in Las Vegas, the Flamingo Hotel and Casino on the strip.
We then drove into Las Vegas and spent the next two days with family we hadn't seen in a very long time. Neither of us had been back to Las Vegas since we moved to Los Angeles just over seven years ago. A lot had changed and a lot had stayed the same. We didn't go out and explore much on this trip, but still enjoyed the neon signs and just let the Vegas spectacle wash over us. It provided a good opportunity to think about the last seven years. We talked a lot as our tired toddler napped in the back seat of the car, about life, our business and about the big changes we have in store over the next few months.

A fun neon sign Boomerang video we shared on Instagram!

Thank you Nevada, we had a great time and may even be back soon!

Happy nearly fall friends!

settling in

We're finally starting to settle into our new studio space. We know, we've been in our "new" space for a little over a year and half, but it's been a pretty tough transition. We made the decision to move into a smaller space with this move and it has certainly been a challenge!

Working in the studio. It's taken some finessing to figure out the best layout in the smaller studio space we now have.
But we've been working things out slowly, trying to pare down where we can and find space saving solutions that will work long term. We've also changed up some of our equipment allowing us to work better and smarter in a smaller space.
Clockwise from L: Keep your Shit Tight from The Mandate Press, Print Faster Mother Fucker from  The Little Friends of Printmaking, Everyday I'm Hustlin from Paperjam Press, our very first test print on the Windmill, New Studio / New Beginnings from Ink+Smog Editions, And The Road Has Always Led West by The Aesthetic Union.
We still have an endlessly long to do list, but we finally hung our posters next to the press in the new shop, so it seems we're now officially moved in!

We hope you've been having a good summer!

a new start in the new year

It's hard to believe that this first month of the new year is already over! While we've been hard at work on new designs and new projects it feels like time is just flying by!

We've been spending a lot of time lately thinking about where we are and where we want to be, pretty usual for this time of year. The last three years have been so full! We're so excited for everything that 2016 has in store, starting with another big move! After nearly three years in DTLA, we've been priced out of the area and are looking forward to new digs in a new part of town. For the moment, we're running around looking at spaces while we're printing our hearts out and getting ready to be up to our eyeballs in boxes again.

In the meantime, take a look at what we've been up to on Instagram! We've been having a lot of fun with new cards and old favorites! As well as sharing fun things we come across as we look at listings.

We hope this new year is treating you well!

Best,

what we're reading these days

On the heels of our busy October, we've been laying low as much as this busy holiday season will allow. One of the things we've been doing is catching up on our reading. Here's a little taste of what we've been perusing.

November 16, 2015

3 things that are inspiring us this week

watercolor

Both of us come from a fine art backgrounds. In fact, we met while we were both getting our Masters of Fine Arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan just outside of Detroit. We take turns photographing, sketching out ideas, drawing out designs, carving out linoleum and creating vector images for all of our projects.

Lately, we've been drawn to including watercolor in our letterpress designs. There's something about the tactility, the unpredictability and the variation in color. We think it works really well with the crisp, bold imprint of letterpress. Stay tuned for some new watercolor/letterpress projects in the new year!

Sketching out some watercolor ideas. We've been very inspired by our summer seasonal Heath Ceramics vase, we love the splatters of glaze!

changing seasons

The little dips of cooler weather we've been getting here in Los Angeles have our minds turning to comfy, cozy thoughts. Our fingers are crossed for the cool rainy weather promised for later this year by the El Nino weather system that should be headed our way this winter. In the meantime, we're enjoying the warm sunny days and cool nights.

A rainy day outside of our studio in DTLA.

Stanislav Pinchuk's delicate hand poked tattoos

We have both fallen in love with the tattoo work of Ukranian-born artist Stanislava Pinchuk (who goes by Miso). She has been trading hand-poked tattoos for things she wants or needs for the last few years. We love the delicate lines and intimate scale of these mini works of art.

Home-made tattoos: A map walking the New York Highline drawn from memory, as a constellation. On my beautiful studio mate @karleee. Traded for a bright white crystal that looks just like a skyscraper. (photo: Stanislav Pinchuk, @m_i_s_o on Instagram)

what we've been up to lately

Thank you to everyone who turned out to see us on Saturday at Eastside Handmade in Highland Park.  As always, it's great to see you and meet you all in person!

The view from our table at Eastside Handmade.
Sorry for the lack of posts lately, we needed to take a little bit of a break from the blog after our October small business cleanse. We've also been busy getting ready for some holiday popups and getting to work on our new collection that will launch in early 2016!

L-R: our set up at Eastside Handmade with our indigo ice dyed table cloth, our 2016 indigo watercolor and letterpress California calendar.
One of the questions we've been getting a lot, both at Eastside Handmade and on social media, is how we dyed the table cloth for our new display. So we thought that we'd share a few of the pictures from our experience with ice dying. You can also take a look at the ice dying instructions from Food 52. Or check out our project idea board on Pinterest for more fun projects we're thinking about doing.

L-R: fabric covered in ice, indigo sprinkled over the ice cubes, the finished product.
Our first step was to run our fabric through a wash cycle, then we soaked everything with soda ash. After wringing our fabric out by hand, we arranged it on dollar store wire cooling racks set atop aluminum foil containers. We then covered our fabric in ice cubes, and sprinkled the indigo dye on top. It's a good idea to sprinkle lightly at first and then add a little more here and there to create areas of more intense color. As the ice melts, the dye disperses into the fabric. We let the ice and dye do their work for about 24 hours. Then we washed everything out by hand until the water ran clear and put it all through the washing machine with some soap. And that is pretty much that. It was a really fun project. And we think it matches our 2016 indigo watercolor letterpress calendar perfectly! Each calendar was embellished with a watercolor flourish before it was put back through the press. We love how they turned out. They've been super popular, but there are only a limited number of them so hurry and get yours before they run out!

L-R: 2016 calendars, Rosemary painting the watercolor flourish with help from the babe, a close up of the watercolor embellishment.
We hope you're having a good fall, it's been on the warm side here for the past few weeks. We're very much enjoying the cool turn the weather has taken over the past few days, its just the right kind of weather for printing!

Best,
Rosemary+Robin
